Many cities in the world have a distinctive Dhaka is known as the city of mosques. We don’t know who assigned this identity to Dhaka but it seems true. When Azan is pronounced, you can hear it from anywhere in this city. There are thousands of mosques in Dhaka, small, medium , big,old and new. The design of these mosques also vary from centuries old to modern artitechture.

Baitul Moquaram mosque in city Centre is our national mosque. It’s the biggest one also. It was designed by a famous architect Thairiani resembling holy Kaaba.

The famous seven tomb mosque is also in Dhaka. Some mosques are also air conditioned.

Mosques are sometimes classified according to religious sectarian belief like Shia mosques, ahle Hadith mosques, Kadiani mosques and of course Sunni mosques. As overwhelming population of Dhaka is hanafi Sunni, most mosques follow this way of prayers.Bahai community has their own mosque. Recently there is a new trend called Salafi. Some mosques follow this new trend also.

Whatever be the difference in beliefs, Dhaka is truly a city of mosques.
